Experiencing the Ridnaun Valley

Summer in the mountains
Haus Maiern is the ideal starting point for easy walks, varied hikes, bike tours, and alpine experiences. Whoever prefers a less sporty holiday, finds cultural attractions and culinary pleasure in the city of Sterzing. The perfect activity for every taste - in the middle of the Alps.

Hikes and walks

Right outside our front door, countless trails lead you through the breathtaking mountain landscape of the Ridnaun Valley. Easy walks in the valley, family-friendly hikes to alpine huts, or demanding hikes to peaks above 3,000m - here, everybody will find their personal favorite tour. Numerous traditional alpine huts along the way invite you to stop, relax, and enjoy regional delicacies. Visit, for example, Martalm or Stadlalm, or hike through the picturesque Burkhard Gorge to Aglsbodenalm. A true paradise for hiking enthusiasts is also the Tour of the Seven Lakes, which starts directly from Haus Maiern, or the Stanghe Gorge, where you hike on stairs and bridges along thundering waterfalls.

Cycling tours

The stunning nature surrounding Haus Maiern is also perfect to explore on two wheels. Whether by mountain bike or e-bike, well-maintained forest trails lead you to charming alpine huts, where a well-deserved break awaits. Hop on your bike and head to the Staudenbergalm, Moarerberg Alm, or Obere Gewingesalm – and for the truly sporty, the hike continues from there up to the peak of Zunderspitze. Need the right bike? You’ll find it at the rental just across the street – it doesn’t get more convenient than that!

Culture and relaxation

Urban alpine flair awaits you in the charming town of Sterzing/Vipiteno. Stroll through the picturesque pedestrian zone, stop by one of the cozy cafés or inviting restaurants, and soak up the unique atmosphere of this small alpine gem.
Culture enthusiasts shouldn’t miss the mine in Maiern/Masseria, where the fascinating history of ore mining comes to life. From here, you can also embark on a full-day tour to the Schneeberg/Monteneve – crossing the pass into the Passeier Valley and returning through the historic mine tunnels deep beneath the mountains.
Another highlight is the baroque Castle Wolfsthurn in Maiern, with its beautifully preserved state rooms and the South Tyrolean Museum of Hunting and Fishing.
For moments of pure relaxation, head to the Balneum in Sterzing with indoor and outdoor pools, as well as a beautiful sauna area.

Snowy winter

Winter in Ridnaun is more than just beautiful – it's magical. Snow-covered landscapes, crisp mountain air, and countless opportunities for outdoor activities await.
Cross-country skiers especially appreciate the vast network of well-groomed trails that wind through the peaceful valley. But Ridnaun also offers ideal conditions for ski mountaineers, snowshoe hikers, toboggan enthusiasts, and alpine skiers, ensuring unforgettable winter days for all.

Winter walks and hikes

On foot, with snowshoes or skis – in Ridnaun, a snowy winter is almost guaranteed, offering ideal conditions for all winter lovers.
Whether you prefer gentle walks through the snow-covered valley and along frozen streams, easy hikes to open mountain huts (perhaps followed by a fun toboggan ride back down), or adventurous winter treks through silent, snow-laden forests – the choice is yours!
For a winter hike that can be combined with a toboggan run, we recommend the Untere Gewingesalm or Stadlalm. Just rent a toboggan at the shop next door – and let the fun begin!

Skiing and snowboarding

Ski fans, take note! The free ski bus stops right in front of Haus Maiern and brings you to the Ratschings-Jaufen ski area in just 20 minutes. Once there, perfectly groomed slopes, cozy mountain huts, and modern lifts are waiting for you.
Whether you're a skier or snowboarder, beginner or pro – everyone can enjoy sunny descents and unforgettable winter days on the mountain.
